What is an in-vehicle monitoring system (IVMS)?

In-Vehicle Monitoring System (IVMS) is a technology that has been used for over 2 decades to monitor transportation. IVMS is mainly used in the oil industry or for safety-critical transportation of hazardous goods. Companies such as BP, Shell and OMV focus on driving safety in their HSE standards in order to continuously monitor the driving style of drivers and prevent serious accidents (life safety risks). The IVMS standards are also applied to subcontractors and freight forwarders who are often involved in transportation on behalf of manufacturing companies.

Why we rely on IVMS as a mineral oil transporter.

IVMS systems are not only used in oil-producing countries, but also here in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Our client OMV operates a network of filling stations. The tank trucks that deliver the fuel to the filling stations are subject to special IVMS requirements as hazardous goods transports. As an Austrian transporter, we also have to continuously monitor the driving style assessment and forward it to our client.

  • Speed monitoring runs via the exact speedometer signal based on the FMS data in the truck.
  • An alarm is triggered in the driver’s cab when driving without a seat belt above 10 km/h.
  • All data is recorded in the GPS Fleet software.

Fleet – 40 IVMS Telematics

The Fleet-40 is a GPS tracking device of the latest telematics generation for trucks, winter service vehicles or buses.

IVMS with GPS tracking

The IVMS tracking device ensures driver recognition in the vehicle and accurately records the speed. In addition, the driver is informed of alarms by means of beeps. In desert areas, the data is temporarily stored on the device.

Reducing the risk for drivers through training and awareness-raising
Danger zones as geofences
Geofence hotspots define danger zones with a lower speed limit
Alerts
Alarms for drivers and in the software in the event of critical events
Reduce transportation costs

IVMS ROG Reports
Red-Orange-Green reports with driver rating

Drivers are assessed on the basis of their driving style and divided into 3 groups:

High risk

Red drivers have a high rating (many overruns per 100 kilometers). Awareness of driving style and training is absolutely essential!

Medium risk

Orange drivers have an average IVMS rating (excess per 100 kilometers). The driving style could be improved!

Low risk

Green drivers have a safe IVMS rating (almost no overruns per 100 kilometers). The driving style of these drivers is very good!

Driving style assessment

All drivers and vehicles can be rated.

  • The number of IVMS driving style events included in the evaluation is shown per 100 kilometers.
  • The formulas for calculating the valuation are configurable.
  • The driving style reports can be exported as Excel or PDF.

What IVMS driving style events are there?

Various alarms and IVMS events can be configured in the IVMS in-vehicle monitoring module of the GPS Fleet software.

  • Global speed limit (e.g. 90 km/h maximum speed)

  • Road-based speed limit

  • Speed limit in company areas (geofence zone-based limit)

  • Hard braking maneuver

  • Strong acceleration

  • Alarm for driving without a seatbelt (driver and front passenger)

  • Travel times too long, downtimes too long

  • SOS emergency button

  • Tamper alarm

  • Night driving alarm outside the permitted zones

IVMS In-Vehicle-Monitoring System evaluations

The IVMS evaluations are used to analyze and evaluate the driving style.

  • The driving time of the drivers is related to the number of IVMS events.
  • The red-green-orange evaluations give fleet managers a very quick overview of very good and less good drivers.
